Angling (Online Poker)

Angling isn't a regularly term used playing online poker however you should know what it means. It is the term used when a player intentionally acts out of turn to influence what players before him will do. Most card rooms or casinos do not take kindly to this and is considered particularly black hat. It's not particularly prevalent online as software doesn't act out of turn very often..

To give you an example, let's assume that there are 6 players in a hand. You are in position 5. Player one raises half his stack to £50. You then declare all in with your stack of £250 before players 2, 3 and 4 have had a chance to act. You will be inadvertently influencing (putting pressure) for players 2, 3 and 4 to fold on the premise you have a big hand - which they might not have done had they not known you were going to be all in.

The type of situation that a player might do this is where he holds a large or medium pair (for example) and only wants a showdown against one other player knowing that against more than one, he is no longer a favorite. It's not very sportsmanlike and on occasion, may be accidental - you'll probably get the same treatment when it happens though:) In this example, where there are three players who have been missed, it's more than likely very intentional.
