'Trips' is hand of poker when a player has hole cards or different value and connects with two of the same rank on the board, making three of a kind. For instance, a player holds AK in a game of Hold'em, and the board comes K-K-7.
A common misconception is that trips is the same as a set. This isn't the case. A set is made when a player holds a pair and connects with the board to make three of a kind. For example, you hold 4-4 and the board comes 2-4-9. You will hit this hand roughly every 8 hands, where you take a pair in hand to the flop.
