'Stack' - Online Poker

A 'stack' in poker refers to the chips that a player has on the table. In online poker, the stack is a virtual represent ion and is often not given the same respect by players new to the game. This amount of chips a player has at the table is known as a players 'stack size'. A players stack size is very important in poker as as a larger stack gives you a certain amount of leeway to play your game. In short, you can afford to make a mistake or two without it costing you too much. Conversely, the shorter your stack, the less power you have at the table.

It's important to understand the different forces at play across cash games and in tournaments, as they are different. In a cash game, having a shorter stack isn't the end of the world, as you can bring more to the table, assuming you have more. In a tournament, unless you are in a rebuy, when you lose your stack, you're done.
