Making a 'Set' - Online Poker

A 'set' is the name for three of a kind, also mistakenly referred to as trips. The reason for this is that a set is made when you hold a pair pre flop and you hit three of a kind on the board. Trips is where two of your three are already on the board. So, an example of a set would be where you hold 44 in a standard game of Hold'em. The board then comes: 4 9 A making the player a set or three 4's. Players will hit their set about 1 in every 8 hands they play a pocket pair. This is one of the most profitable and well disguised hands, especially if up against a player who has hit top pair. There will usually be a real opportunity to extract money from these players (or players who have hit draws or two pair).
