Mucking a Hand - Online Poker

'The muck' refers to cards in the deck that no longer play any part of the hand. This is the same in live games and in online poker. When a hand of poker is dealt, there will be players who throw away or muck their hands. Additionally, in community card games, when the board is dealt, there are burn cards - all of these cards are also thrown into the muck, and play no further part of the hand.

If you watch any standard game of Hold'em, you will see that before each board card is dealt, a card is burned. This was always to ensure that the top card isn't planted (makes it more difficult for cheats). Online, you will also see auto actions, one of which is the fold button. When you fold, you will often see 'Mucked' indicating that the hand has been folded.
