Folding Your Cards in Online Poker

A player is said to 'fold' his cards in an online poker game when he wishes to take no further part in the hand. The cards would in essence be thrown to the muck and the player would take no further part in the hand. The terms is used in all games whether online or live. The folding player would also relinquish any chips that he had contributed to the pot. The action of folding usually means that the player does not have a strong enough hand to continue. Folding can either be that there is no hand made at all or the hand the player has made isn't strong enough to warrant calling the bet.

The objective of any game of poker is to win money. There are a number of ways that this can be achieved. The first way to do this is to have the best hand at showdown - you turn over your winning hand and win the pot. The second way is to get all other players to fold their cards, meaning you win by default as the last man standing. This second method is really what gives poker it's unique fun element. The fact that you don't have to have the best hand to win the pot. This opens up the doors to bluffing and lots of psychology and game play to control how opponents play against you. If we only won pots through having the best hand, the profitability of the game would be considerably less.

There's a popular saying in world of poker. It's not about the cards you hold, it's what your opponents think you hold that counts.
