Adapting Strategy in Online Poker

If we were to rewind 15 years, tight agressive play (TAG) was the prefered style of play. Back then, it worked a lot better than it does today, mainly as the standard of play is a lot better than it was 15 years ago and also as it's predictable - meaning it's exploitable. This strategy makes it hard to disguise a players range and equally difficult to represent low boards.

This style also attracts less resistence as players often don't like to make a stand too often against this unpredictable style of play.

 

Embracing Strategy Changes Online

Tight aggressive players do not make as much as much as they take down far more pots pre flop. The reason for this is two fold. Firstly, as their hands are less disguised, other players see it coming. Secondly, TAG players have a tendency of 3-betting on a strong hand pre flop, which again, isn't always the best strategy, and here's why. If we hold a monster, we want players with worse hands getting involved and players with better hands folding. A pre flop 3-bet, especially a light one does the opposite of what we need. It firstly tells players we have a strong hand before the flop, turn and river - the places the pot is larger and we can make more money. Secondly, it inflates the size of the pot. When we miss on the flop, it is difficult to know what to do, especially if our continuation bet is called. The key - don't overuse the pre flop 3 bet if you're not planning to take down the pot there and then.

 

So whilst bullying pre flop and then taking the pot down with a continuation bet seems like good play - we will often miss out on greater rewards later in the hand. If we have a big hand, why wouldn't we want weaker players building the pot for us? Many weak players just want to take down the pot. Why? Because they don't want to play poker. This is either down to the fact they don't think they have the skills to win the pot post flop or through fear that their pre flop monster might get overturned. If we are not prepared to take any risks, we can't expect any real rewards.

 

Players online are far more agressive than live players and they have gotten even more agressive in the last decade. It's important we adapt our online strategy to one that is going to be effective in maximising how much we make from the hands we play.
